Teenager dies, child in hospital after vehicle ends up in canal

BONNEVILLE COUNTY — A 17-year-old has died after the vehicle he was in ended up in a canal over the weekend.

On Sunday at 8:45 p.m., a caller reported a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 145th North (North County Line Road) and 115th East. The car was submerged in the adjacent canal.

The Bonneville and Jefferson County sheriff’s offices responded along with the Central Fire Department and Idaho Falls EMS.

Officers trained in water rescue and diving were able to extricate two children, ages 17 and 12, from the vehicle, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Both were taken by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where the 17-year-old died. The 12-year-old remained hospitalized Monday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

“Officers determined the juveniles were attempting to turn east from the Jefferson County side of the intersection (4500 East) onto 145th North (North County Line Road) and failed to yield the right of way to a pickup truck pulling a boat traveling west on 145th North,” officers said.

The car, a Chevy Malibu, was hit on the driver’s side and went off the road into the canal.

The investigation is still ongoing.
