Chappell Roan Wore Only MAC Makeup to the 2024 VMAs

When Chappell Roan is at a party, you can bet she’s going to have a blast. Boring is not in her vocabulary! VMAs 2024Chappell did just that: she killedbut not just in the way you think. For her performance and red carpet appearance, the artist seemed to be going for “Joan of Arc if she had a Sephora account” and fully embodied a Gothcoremedieval look (yes, sword nails, et al). And despite how it looks, it’s actually surprisingly easy to recreate. Chappell’s glam was achieved using all the MAC Cosmetics products, yes, even her light eye makeup!!

Chappell Roan’s appearance is always whimsically unexpected (remember her Statue of Liberty Cosplay she wore to Gov Ball?!). And while she definitely caused a stir at this year’s VMAs, I’d say her makeup look is in line with the biggest fall beauty trends of the year. Dark academia vibe (with a hint of Dark Ages), anyone?

The eyes say it all! The most important part of Chappell’s look is undoubtedly her eye makeup. For the occasion, Dahling created a not-so-typical smokey eye, consisting of gold, silver, and pink eyeshadow glitters blended all the way up to her browbone. The contrast of the blended metallic tones helped give her eyes a nice pop with the gold shadow on her lower waterline and inner corner, while the silver and pink shadows sat on the top center of her lid, creating an icy—dare I say—full armor look. As for her snow queen white mascara, this Macstack Mascara achieves the same bold look.

Two lipstick shades were used to make the magic happen: Velvet Teddy and Sin. The two were combined to create a deep burgundy stained look. Dahling also lined Chappell’s lips with MAC’s Lip Pencil in Auburn and finished it all off by applying the shade Nightmoth to the center of her lip, creating a dark ombre finish that is so gorgeously medieval gothcore *chef’s kiss!!!*.

It wouldn’t be a Chappell Roan makeup tutorial without her signature porcelain base. On top of her foundation and concealer, Dahling also mixed the base products with MAC’s paint stick in white (which is currently sold out, but there are tons of similar artist shades online, like this one from Haus Labs ). Since her eye and lip makeup are the center of the show, the focus here was on a dewy, radiant complexion that pulled everything together and made the contrast even more pronounced.
