Jesse Plemons watching his own sex tape is just one of the many absurd, obscene moments in Types of kindnessthe new black comedy from Oscar-nominated director Yorgos Lanthimos. Types of kindness is an anthology film consisting of three short films, starring Plemons, Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn and Mamoudou Athie in various roles. The second story, titled “RMF Is Flying”, stars Plemons as a police officer named Daniel, who mourns the loss of his wife Liz (Emma Stone) at sea.

To cheer him up, Daniel’s buddy Neil (Mamoudou Athie) and Neil’s wife Martha (Margaret Qualley) go to Daniel’s house for dinner. Daniel is clearly touched by their kindness and their optimism that his Liz will return. At one point during the night, Plemons grabs his fellow actors’ hands.

“Thank you so much, both of you,” he says, as sincerely as anything. “For everything.” Then, still holding his friends’ hands, he asks them, “Do you mind if we watch a video? One of the old ones?”

It’s so tentative, so hopeful, so tender and so sweet. It’s heartbreaking when Athie’s character, Neil, tries to gently reject his friend. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Daniel. I think we’d all find that a bit awkward.”

Plemons begins to plead. “Just a little bit? A minute, no more. To remember her.”

“I really don’t think we should do that. It won’t do you any good, and it’ll be pretty weird for us,” Qualley’s character, Martha, responds. “You’ve shown us all those beautiful pictures of Liz on the boat, during her travels.”

“Okay,” Plemons replies, dejected. He finishes his drink and pours another. Then he starts to cry. Athie and Qualley exchange a frightened look. Finally, they give in.

“Okay, okay,” Athie rubs Plemon’s back comfortingly. “We can watch a bit of that video.”

“Thank you,” Plemmons says. Then he immediately stops crying and gets up to put the video on. That little faker!

The best part? The video that Plemons begged to watch with tears in his eyes? It’s a sex tape, featuring Plemons, Athie, Stone and Qualley in a passionate orgy.

Athie and Qualley watch uneasily, their own moans and gasps coming off the screen. Athie asks Plemons to turn the volume down, and Plemons reluctantly agrees. But even with the volume turned down, Plemons is locked in. He watches, raptly, as the TV versions of himself and Athie bash the TV versions of Stone and Qualley from behind.

The tape cuts to another part of this night of debauchery, to a shot of Qualley performing oral sex on Plemons while he slams his face into Stone’s chest. It’s a little too graphic to screenshot for this article, but trust us, it’s there. And honestly, who can blame Plemons for wanting to watch it all the time after watching this tape? This man has an Emma Stone and Margaret Qualley sex tape handy! Wouldn’t you beg your friends to watch that?
