Booger McFarland reacts to Notre Dame surprise, Riley Leonard upset

NOTRE DAME VS NORTHERN ILLINOIS PREVIEW | Final Thoughts, Observations, and Predictions

It was an ugly afternoon for Notre Dame in South Bend, when the Irish lost 16-14 to Northern Illinois. And transfer quarterback Riley Leonard didn’t look sharp.

On the day itself, Leonard went 20 of 32 for 163 yards and a pair of interceptions through the air, while adding a touchdown rushing on 11 carries for 16 net yards. It continued the trend of Leonard and Co. generally struggling through the air that developed in Week 1.

And ESPN analyst Snotneus McFarland believes there is a rift between Leonard and his offensive coordinator, Mike Denbrockthat needs to be resolved.

“There appears to be a rift between new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, who came over from LSUand Riley Leonard,” McFarland said. “He’s trying to figure out what Riley does well. He knew what Jayden (Daniels) “I was a good player at LSU and won the Heisman. But right now, there’s a disconnect. And every time Riley throws the ball up the field, he gets intercepted. The underpass game isn’t there. Denbrock has to get Riley Leonard moving. He seems more comfortable moving, but they’re going to have to find a way to support the defense and make more explosive plays.”
