Red Sox promote hometown flamethrower, DFA Rich Hill

The Red Sox made a difficult decision about their roster on Friday.

Boston promoted right-handed pitcher Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester, creating room on the active roster with the addition of veteran pitcher Rich Hill.

Guerrero, 24, has a remarkable story. He was born in the Dominican Republic but moved to Boston as a child, where he grew up near Franklin Park. The Red Sox selected him in the 17th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Chipola College in Florida, and have since watched him rack up triple-digit scoring rates while racking up prolific strikeout numbers — all despite a significant obstacle.

Guerrero underwent knee surgery and spent about nine months in the hospital as a toddler. Since then, he has had limited knee mobility because the muscles in that area did not grow like the others. He still walks with a limp.

The Red Sox have seen him develop over the past three seasons, as the flamethrower has a 3.31 ERA in 54 1/3 innings this season for Triple-A Worcester.

He wears number 99.

Hill, 44, made just four appearances in his last stint with the Red Sox, with his ERA rising to 4.91 after a couple of disappointing outings. Boston likely wants to focus on developing young arms in the late stages, which led to the decision.

The Red Sox open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET, following an hour and a half of postgame coverage on NESN.
