Bears GM Ryan Poles happy, hopefully no worries about QB position ‘for a long time’

“It must be nice,” Schoen began, “not to look at the, uh…”

“Quarterbacks?” Poles asked, finishing Schoen’s sentence.

Both general managers laughed.

“Hopefully it stays that way for a long time,” said Poles.

In his own Hard blows spotlight earlier this year, Schoen discussed the Giants’ approach to drafting with the No. 6 overall pick, including potentially trading up to select a quarterback. The Giants instead sat back and selected LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers, leaving Daniel Jones in a potential make-or-break situation this season.

The Bears were left in a similarly shaky QB situation with Justin Fields when Poles inked a massive deal with the Panthers in 2023, trading away that year’s top overall pick, which Carolina used to draft Bryce Young. However, the investment resulted in Poles selecting Williams as the Bears’ franchise hopeful for the future this year, as Chicago acquired receiver DJ Moore and a cache of draft picks, one of which became the 2024 No. 1 overall selection.

So far, Poland’s decision has paid off, with plenty of positive feedback from Williams and the Bears this off-season.

All that cheering and optimism will come to fruition when Williams and co. kick off Sunday against the Titans. Pole hopes this is the start of a “long period” where they don’t have to search for a quarterback to lead the franchise.
