Untold: Hope Solo vs. U.S. Soccer was recently released on Netflix and the documentary raises many questions about what the former Team USA goalie is doing now.

In 2016, the 43-year-old was cut from the U.S. women’s national team after more than 15 years on the team, but she’s been in and out of the spotlight ever since. Now, the documentary explores what she’s been up to since her suspension.

So, what happened to Hope Solo and where is she now? Here’s what you need to know.

What happened to Hope Solo?

Hope has faced several scandals during her time on the US Women’s National Team and beyond.

In 2016, she was suspended from the team for six months after she said the Swedish national team had behaved like “a bunch of cowards” following their victory over the US at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the Los Angeles Times‘ Kevin BaxterHer contract was also terminated.

In the documentary, Hope alleges that she was suspended for seeking equal pay. (In 2016, Hope and four other players—Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd and Rebecca Sauerbrunn—filed an equal employment opportunity complaint alleging discrimination. They noted that the women’s soccer team was not paid or treated nearly as well as the men’s team, despite having a much better record.)

“In 2015, I knew I had discovered something I shouldn’t have discovered,” she said in the documentary. “But at the time, I had no idea that I might have made an enemy. A year later, I was fired.”

“They said, ‘She was a bad sportswoman,'” she continued, “but I think she was. I wanted to make money with US Soccer.” In 2022, the players received a $24 million settlement from US Soccer.

In 2022, Hope was arrested for driving under the influence after someone noticed her passed out behind the wheel of her car in a parking lot for more than an hour, according to ESPN. (Her two children were also in the car.) She later pleaded guilty and entered rehab later that year, according to People.

In a statement released after she pleaded guilty, Hope said she had made “a huge mistake.”

“Easily the biggest mistake of my life,” she said. “I underestimated how destructive alcohol had become in my life. The upside of making such a big mistake is that hard lessons are learned quickly. Learning those lessons has been hard, and at times very painful.”

Where is Hope Solo now?

Hope was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2023. She deferred her induction for a year because of her stay in rehab, according to People.

The documentary showed that Hope lived in Asheville, North Carolina to be spiritually closer to her father, who spent part of her childhood in the woods. Her father died in 2007 after a heart attack.

“My father loved the peace and quiet of his tent in the woods,” she said. “And after everything that had happened, I knew I needed a fresh start. And here I feel closer to him than ever…and strong.”

Hope made a podcast called Hope Solo speaks until 2023, during which she chatted with various public figures. She is also a mother of twins and is still married to former NFL player Jerramy Stevens.

Hope is not very active on social media: her last post on Instagram was on August 10, in which she congratulated the US national team and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher on their gold medal.
