Nick Kyrgios offers to coach Coco Gauff after backlash against Brad Gilbert

Nick Kyrgios wants to play football again, but in a different way than you might think.

The former 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who is now a tennis reporter, may be looking for a new job as Coco Gauff’s coach.

Kyrgios offered his services to the 2023 US Open champion after she lost to compatriot Emma Navarro 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the fourth round. She missed out on the quarter-finals again at the hands of Navarro, just as she did at Wimbledon.

Kyrgios became known for his bad boy antics on court, including swearing at officials, spitting at fans and making obscene gestures, but he did reach the world No. 11 ranking in 2022.

Kyrgios’ offer also comes at a time when Gauff’s current coach, Brad Gilbert, is facing heavy criticism for their continued collaboration following another early exit from a Grand Slam.

Although Gilbert has trained Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi in the past, fans have called on the young American to sever ties with her coach.

“My honest advice to @CocoGauff is to fire @bgtennisnation. He became Gauff’s head coach in November 2023 and her game has declined ever since. Brad loves himself more than anyone and that doesn’t work when you’re a head coach,” a tennis blogger posted on X.

In the same post, a fan commented that Kyrgios should work with her, to which he replied, “I would coach her.”

Even the former coach of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, Rennae Stubbs, weighed in on Gauff’s “poor” technique against Gilbert in an interview with ESPN.

“Where’s Coco’s confidence?” Stubbs wondered, according to Sportskeeda. “There’s no second serve, that’s the sign. And that’s a problem.”

“So under pressure, bad technique breaks down and her technique is… hard for me to say because Brad (Gilbert) is here… but her technique, the elbow, is too low, the grip is a little bit weird as well,” she continued. “So it’s hard for her to get that nice first serve and then the same or similar second serve.”

Gauff, 20, had not played well in the hardcourt tournaments leading up to the Open and there was little improvement in Flushing as she consistently struggled with her service game.

During the fourth round match, Gauff showed her frustration and kept looking at her box and saying, “Tell me something!”

Against Navarro she made 60 unforced errors and had 19 double faults.
