US President Joe Biden withdraws from re-election bid

JOHANNESBURG – US President Joe Biden has announced he will not seek re-election, a decision he said was “in the best interest of my party and the country.”

The United States will go to the polls on November 5.

In a statement released Sunday, he said he would provide more details later in the week and thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for “being an extraordinary partner in all of this work.”

“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me re-elected… And let me express my sincere gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust they have placed in me,” Biden said.
