NIU head coach overcome with emotion after historic upset win over Notre Dame

Northern Illinois just shocked the world. The Huskies defeated Notre Dame in South Bend 16-14 on a late 35-yard field goal by Cannon Woodill to the Fighting Irishmen and the nation as the fifth-placed side suffer their first defeat of the season.

The home team struggled to move the ball early on, but still had a few chances, mostly on field goal opportunities that they couldn’t capitalize on. Cade Haberman had two blocked field goals, but the most important was probably the second.

After NIU scored to take a late lead, Notre Dame drove down the field and attempted a 62-yard field goal. However, the kick was blocked again, and the Huskies began celebrating their historic upset.

His head coach was the one who was emotional

Thomas Hammock coached this team well after leading them to a big win. His emotions were on display and what a way to put the team first. During his post game interview he talked about the work the whole team put in to achieve these things.

“All these guys have been through our program, been through the ups and downs and kept fighting. It’s like they’re my kids… I couldn’t be more proud,” he said, through tears.

Let’s not forget he was an NIU football player, so people can only imagine what this means to him and the program. The win over Notre Dame was the football team’s first win over a Top 10 team.
